Why replacing damaged windows is better than repairing them

The best indicator that everything is fine with your windows is if you never think about them – this suggests that they’re doing their job properly. Homeowners generally only think about their windows if they’ve started to notice a draught, sticking frames or fogging on the glass. If there’s a problem with your windows, then it’s often easier and more affordable to fully replace damaged windows, rather than repair the damaged part. Below, we explain some of the situations in which this would be the case.

Broken seals

If you notice that your window is fogging up from the inside, this indicates that the seal is broken – ultimately damaging the energy-efficiency capabilities of the double glazing. In this instance, you should replace the window. There are temporary ‘quick fixes’ that you can do, such as weather stripping the unit, but these will only be effective for a short period of time. It is far better to replace the unit with high-quality, energy-efficient double glazing, as doing so will ensure that your windows can continue to function as effectively as possible.

Rotting or damaged frames

There are a number of reasons that you might need to replace your window frames. Your windows might be particularly old (perhaps made of timber) and have started to rot, crack or swell, leaving the frames weak and sticking.

Or, there may have been an incident that has resulted in your uPVC or aluminium window frames being damaged – for example, a break-in. In situations like these, it is often easier and more affordable to replace the frames, rather than trying to repair them. While a repair may rectify the issue in the short-term, it is likely that the weakened frames will just need repairing again a few years down the line, so it really is worth investing in replacement frames so that you know the issue is fully sorted.

Broken hardware

If your window is sticking or you are having real difficulty opening it, then it could be that the hardware is damaged. For older windows, a replacement is generally the most suitable choice. This is partly because it is difficult to find replacement hardware for old windows, and also because it’s likely that older windows need updating anyway in order to meet Building Regulations and energy-efficiency requirements.

Here at Taybuild, we have a wide range of replacement windows for you to choose from. If you live in Dundee, Angus, Fife, Aberdeen or surrounding areas contact us today. We’ll be happy to provide you with a free, no-obligation quotation for the work.
